Healing the world through indigenous innovation

Rua Bioscience is a pioneering Māori-owned pharmaceutical company based in Ruatōria, Te Tai Rāwhiti. Established in 2016, Rua cultivates pharmaceutical-grade medicinal cannabis using sustainable methods, Indigenous knowledge, and cutting-edge science. Their mission: to improve global wellbeing while uplifting their people and place.

We were engaged to develop Rua’s name, brand strategy, and identity — all grounded in Indigenous innovation and intergenerational knowledge. The result is a brand that weaves together the spiritual and the scientific, the local and the global.

A Name of Dual Purpose

The name Rua, meaning "two" in te reo Māori, reflects the company’s foundational kaupapa: He Tāngata, He Whenua — the people and the land. This duality speaks to Rua’s core strength: balancing innovation and tradition, science and nature, commerce and community.

A Brand Woven with Intention

Rua’s story is told through the metaphor of raranga — weaving together seemingly opposing threads to create strength and unity:

“Like a piece of weaving that brings elements together to create something strong and enduring, Rua Bioscience is bound by a shared determination to accomplish something extraordinary.”

From tone of voice to visual expression, the brand embodies a collective force for good — creating medicine for today, and impact for generations to come.

Guided by Te Ao Māori

The brand is deeply shaped by Te Ao Māori principles and values:

Whakapapa – grounding the business in heritage, people and place
Whakawhanaungatanga – building strong community connections
Kaitiakitanga – care and wellbeing, protecting the land through ethical, sustainable practice

These values were embedded across the identity, informing everything from language and visual design to partnership and policy.

Global Vision, Local Commitment

With export agreements in Europe and Australia — including a five-year supply deal with Motagon — Rua’s global footprint is growing. Yet its roots remain firmly in Te Tai Rāwhiti, where it continues to invest in local jobs, research, and rangatahi futures.

Rua Bioscience is more than a pharmaceutical company — it’s a living example of how Indigenous solutions can shape a better, more balanced world.
