Weaving together a new entity to represent Integrity in Sport for Aotearoa
The Sport Integrity Commission – Te Kahu Raunui was established with the ambition to ensure that all sport and recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand is safe and fair at every level of participation. As a newly independent Government entity, the Commission welcomed Drug Free Sport New Zealand into its fold and introduced minimum standards to uphold integrity across sport and recreation.
Through a series of engaging and collaborative wānanga with members of the Commission’s Establishment Board and Te Ope Tāmiro, a guiding framework and cultural narrative were developed to shape the Commission’s work.
This framework was inspired by the art of weaving a kākahu (cloak) and guided by the following tongikura – "Kotahi te kōhao o te ngira e kuhuna ai te miro mā, te miro pango, te miro whero." – Pōtatau Te Wherowhero. There is but one eye of the needle, through which white, black, and red threads must pass.
The kākahu symbolizes the strength that arises from unity and integrity. It reminds all within the Commission and wider sport community that just as the threads of a cloak interweave to form a strong foundation, so too do collective efforts and shared values create active, resilient, and healthy communities.
The design details of the kākahu incorporate horizontal lines or whenu, which represent the organisational values:
Haumarutanga – safety and respect
Hauora – whānau ora and well-being
Kaitiakitanga – leadership and guardianship
Whanaungatanga – connection and kinship
These values are intricately woven through multiple vertical threads or aho, symbolizing all participants, organisations, and communities involved in sport and recreation. Together, this kākahu represents a strong, protective, and supportive environment for everyone to enjoy positive sporting and recreational experiences.
The Māori name Te Kahu Raunui brings this concept to life:
'Te Kahu' expresses the interconnected relationships within the sport and recreation community and its shared values. 'Raunui' reflects the Commission’s broad responsibilities and its commitment to fulfilling them with openness and honesty.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Sport Integrity Commission Te Kahu Raunui whānau, Te Ope Tāmiro, and the whānau of Te Kakano o te Aroha Marae, Petone, who welcomed and supported our participation throughout this kaupapa.
