A New Take on Education’s Most Enduring Symbol

The graduation gown has gone unchanged for more than 900 years. Education New Zealand – Manapou ki te Ao saw an opportunity to reimagine this symbol for a new generation — one that reflects Aotearoa’s unique identity, values, and global outlook.

Designed Through Collaboration and Culture
Led by designer Kiri Nathan, in collaboration with fashion industry experts and students from across the education community, Te Kākahu Hou was created as a bold expression of who we are. Every design decision was informed by Te Ao Māori, Te Taiao (the natural environment), and the values of kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga, and pōtiki spirit.

Eight handcrafted gowns were made using sustainably sourced and upcycled materials, with design elements carrying deep meaning:

Kaitiakitanga — expressed through repurposed natural fibres and biodegradable fabrics.
Pōtiki Spirit — reflected in the asymmetrical design, symbolising innovation and movement.
Manaakitanga — embodied in the woven scarf, representing cultures coming together in care and unity.

More Than a Gown — A Cultural Statement

Each gown carries the Poutama pattern, symbolising an individual’s journey of learning and growth. Students were central to the process — sharing their voices and stories, which were celebrated in a global campaign spanning digital, social, PR, and events.

Te Kākahu Hou signals a future where our most enduring educational symbol embraces sustainability, diversity, and cultural integrity — a garment that honours tradition while speaking to the world.
