Tū Ngātahi – Stand Together, a symbol of connection and care
During the height of the pandemic, international students in Aotearoa faced immense challenges — closed borders, isolation, and uncertainty, all while far from home. Education New Zealand – Manapou ki te Ao recognised the need for a response grounded in empathy, cultural integrity, and care.
In partnership, we developed Tū Ngātahi — a kaupapa to reassure international students that they are seen, valued, and supported as part of our wider whānau here in Aotearoa.
At the heart of this initiative is a pounamu pin — a physical expression of connection and appreciation. Gifted to students, the pin symbolises belonging and the bond between Aotearoa and the many cultures who come here to learn.
He Taonga — A Gift of Meaning
The pin features the Pikorua, a design representing enduring connection and unity. Carved from pounamu — a treasured stone of Aotearoa — it honours the shared journey between students and their host country.
Every element of the kaupapa was shaped through deep cultural collaboration. Ed Tuari, ENZ Chief Manukura Māori, guided the process — from naming Tū Ngātahi — Stand Together in consultation with Māori language advisor Te Haumihiata Mason, to selecting the Pikorua as the central motif. The pounamu was hand-carved by Ngāi Tahu-registered artist Dean Taylor, a process documented in a short film that captures its cultural and creative significance.
A Growing Legacy
To date, over 20,000 pins have been gifted across Aotearoa and beyond. Each one carries a simple, powerful message: you are not alone.
